The majority of my work is helping Vets to reach a diagnosis on why farm animals have died. This is achieved by cutting thin pieces of tissue (Histology) and looking down a microscope or by growing bacteria on nutrient rich agar (Microbiology).
-
My Typical Day:
Each day is spent collecting samples from farm animals that have died. I then carryout a variety of tests to find out why they died and if they can pass the illness on to other animals on the farm.

Each day I start by cutting thin slithers of tissue on a machine so that I can stain them and find out why the animal has died. Sometimes animals just die and I can never find an answer why.
If an animal has an illness, I can also grow the bacteria and do simple test to find which antibiotic would be best suited to make the animal better.

What I'd do with the prize money:
Create a virtual bacteriology lab where you would be the scientist and based on test you perform you will be able to identify bacteria.
